Should Weed Be Legal?

http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/07/us/recreational-marijuana-laws/index.html
Where is pot legal for recreation and or medically? Currently only Colorado and Washington have legalized recreation use and in 2016 Alaska and Oregon well join them. While 27 other states and DC have legalized medical marijuana and or decriminalized it in some way. Utah is one of the states where marijuana is still very much illegal. But the debate still rolls on on whether or not it should be legal.
People for the legalization say that the drug isn't as harmful as people say it is and that there aren't dangerous side effects or long term health risks. Decriminalizing marijuana would decrease criminal activity and also generate tax revenue.
People against legalization say that there are major side effects and damage you health and ability to think properly. Legalizing will make it more abundant which will cause lots of damage to our nation's health and safety.
What do you guys think? I want to hear a debate about this!

  1. Are there any actual studies that show whether or not it affects your health one way or another? And as far as the political side goes, isn't the gov just taxing the crap out of it? Like they do on normal tobacco cigarets? To me it's kinda like "lets make some money off of peoples addictions!!"

  2. I think that nicotine and cigerettes are a lot more addictive than marijuana. But, our government does tax it and can benefit financially. I don't know about it being legal everywhere in the country though.

  4. Part of the problem is that legalizing marijuana doesn't stop people from using it, although it is harder to get a hold of. If you want information about what the drug does to people's health, the environment, and it's effect on the economy, then check out the webpage below. It was pretty interesting.

  5. I want to know where these people get their ideas that drugs don't effect your health. That is exactly what they are made for. I can see how people would think it would help the economy, but I think that it would have way more negative effects then it would positive ones.

  6. I agree with Alan. Drugs alter you regardless if they're are legal or illegal. I also don't like how people use the arguement that marijuana is better for you because it's not as harmful as other illegal drugs. It's still a drug and will change your body.

  7. The argument that it will help the economy because of the taxes is only part of the story. You also have to consider to how much money is going into health care now, money for law enforcement, and other factors not just taxes that can have negative effects. Some people argue that marijuana isn't as hazardous to health as cigarettes or alcohol and shouldn't be illegal.
